Keypad phones — also called feature phones or button phones — still sell in serious numbers across Pakistan. They cost between Rs. 1,500 and Rs. 12,000, last for days on a single charge, and survive drops that would kill a smartphone.

Most buyers fall into a few groups: people who want a second phone for calls, families buying for elderly parents, workers who need something durable on site, and anyone who simply wants a phone that doesn't need charging every night.

Nokia (HMD Global) — The most trusted name for durability. The Nokia 105 and similar models are the benchmark for battery life and build quality. Distributed officially by Advance Telecom.

itel — Best value in the Rs. 2,500–6,000 range. Popular models include the itel 5026 (around Rs. 2,749), the Muzik series known for loud audio, and the Neo range. Large buttons make them suitable for older users.

Sparx — Strong local presence with authorised service centres. Models like the Gionee Q26 (around Rs. 2,950) and Power X (around Rs. 3,350, with a 3,000mAh battery) are common picks.

QMobile, Dcode, Faywa, Calme, G'Five — Widely available at lower prices, though after-sales support varies by brand.

Battery Life: What the mAh Number Doesn't Tell You

This is the most misunderstood part of buying a keypad phone, and it's worth understanding before you pay.

A bigger battery doesn't always mean longer standby. What actually matters is the display type and network band:

• A monochrome Nokia 105 with an 800mAh battery delivers around 25 days of standby

• A colour-display 4G phone with a 2,000mAh battery manages roughly 7 days

The 4G modem and backlit colour screen drain far more power than the small battery gains make up for. So if maximum battery life is your priority, a smaller 2G phone with a basic screen will outlast a bigger 4G one.

2G or 4G — Which Should You Buy?

2G keypad phones are cheaper, last much longer per charge, and handle calls and SMS perfectly. The downside: no internet, no WhatsApp, and eventually networks will phase out 2G.

4G keypad phones cost more and need charging weekly rather than monthly, but some support WhatsApp, mobile hotspot, and basic browsing. Worth it if you want a simple phone that can still message on WhatsApp.

Note that "4G support" doesn't automatically mean WhatsApp works — that depends on the operating system. Confirm the specific model before buying if that feature matters to you.

What to Check Before Buying

PTA approval. Every phone sold through authorised retailers here should be PTA approved. Check the IMEI by dialling *#06# and verifying it on the PTA DIRBS portal. Non-PTA units stop working on local networks after the grace period.

Buy from authorised sellers. Nokia (Advance Telecom), Sparx, and Faywa all run certified service centres in Lahore, Karachi, and Islamabad with warranty registration. Unbranded phones — often sold with generic labels — rarely have real after-sales support, even when advertised with a "1-year warranty."

Check the keypad and screen in person. Button feel and screen readability vary widely at this price. If you're buying for an elderly user, larger buttons and higher-contrast displays make a real difference.

Dual SIM. Most keypad phones support two SIMs, but confirm — some budget models don't.

Which Keypad Phone Suits You

For maximum battery life — A basic 2G Nokia. Nothing beats a monochrome screen for standby time.

For elderly users — itel or Sparx models with large buttons and loud speakers. Look for a dedicated SOS button if available.

For a second phone — Anything in the Rs. 2,500–4,000 range with dual SIM and a decent battery.

For WhatsApp on a button phone — A 4G model above Rs. 5,000, with the OS confirmed to support it.

For rough use or site work — Nokia's build quality is worth the extra cost here.
